Full steam ahead for 18th Asian Games 2018

24 JUN 2016

Jakarta, Indonesia, June 24, 2016: The President of the Indonesian Olympic Committee and Indonesia Asian Games Organising Committee (INASGOC), Mr. Erick Thohir, presided over a kick-off meeting on June 23. The meeting, which took place at the Fairmont Hotel in Senayan, near the capital’s main sports complex, was held to inaugurate the new full team of INASGOC.

This means that, from now, all the functional departments and staff are in place and can step up preparations for the OCA’s 18th Asian Games, which will take place in Jakarta and Palembang, capital of South Sumatra, from August 18 to September 2, 2018.

In other developments from Indonesia, Antara News reports that Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) inaugurated the construction of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) mass transportation system, reconstruction of a velodrome in Rawamangun and the renovation of an equestrian venue in Jakarta.

“The velodrome and the equestrian venues will be world-class facilities and will meet Olympic standards," Ahok stated at the Rawamangun Sports Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 22. International athletes will be comfortable in the venues as they will find similarities between the Olympic venues in other countries and those in Jakarta, Ahok pointed out.

It is estimated that the velodrome project will cost up to US$40 million as the government has hired a special contractor from the United States, ES Global, which is a specialist in the field. The construction of the velodrome is supervised by the Union Cycliste Internationale, while the equestrian project is under direct supervision to create an Asian Equestrian Federation Disease-Free Zone on a 35-hectare plot of land.

A total of 15,000 athletes and officials from the OCA’s 45 National Olympic Committees are expected to take part in the 18th Asian Games, along with 8,000 media and a workforce of 30,000 volunteers and staff.
